Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Excitement filled the air in Riyadh as the city’s long-awaited metro system officially began operations, marking a significant milestone in the capital’s transportation infrastructure. Residents flocked to the metro on its inaugural day, eager to experience the ride that promises to transform their daily commutes.
“My first ride was smooth,” said 24-year-old Abdullah al-Faleh, speaking from the striking King Abdullah Financial District station, a hub designed by renowned Zaha Hadid Architects. “Many of my family members and colleagues look forward to taking their metro rides. This will ease the well-known Riyadh traffic. This is truly an amazing day.”
Phased Rollout of Mega Project
The Riyadh Metro project, originally announced in 2014, is one of the largest transit undertakings ever executed in a single phase. The system is opening in three stages, with the Blue, Yellow, and Purple Lines debuting in the initial phase.
The Blue Line, spanning 38 kilometers (24 miles), runs north to south through Downtown Riyadh, offering a vital connection across the city. The Red and Green Lines are scheduled to begin operations by December 15, while the Orange Line is set to launch on January 5, 2025.
Residents expressed enthusiasm about the metro’s impact on their lives. “I have been waiting for this day for 10 years,” said Mohammed al-Arifi, 25, who took his first ride on Sunday. “I look forward to using the metro more as it will reduce my daily commute time.”
Future-Ready Transport
With Riyadh’s population projected to nearly double from 7.5 million in 2023 to up to 20 million by 2030, the metro is designed to meet the growing demand for efficient public transportation. The network also aims to alleviate the city’s infamous traffic congestion, paving the way for a more sustainable and accessible urban environment.
